According to the CIA World Factbook, there are 17,508 islands.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CIA_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geography_of_Indonesia#cite_note-CIA-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The discrepancy between the surveys is likely caused by the earlier different survey method including\u00a0<a title=\"Tide\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tide\">tidal<\/a>islands, sandy\u00a0<a title=\"Cay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cay\">cays<\/a>\u00a0and rocky\u00a0<a title=\"Reef\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reef\">reefs<\/a>\u00a0that surface during low tide and submerge during high tide. There are 8,844 named islands according to estimates made by the\u00a0<a title=\"Politics of Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Politics_of_Indonesia\">government of Indonesia<\/a>, with 922 of those are permanently inhabited.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geography_of_Indonesia#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It comprises five main islands:\u00a0<a title=\"Sumatra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sumatra\">Sumatra<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Java (island)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Java_(island)\">Java<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Borneo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borneo\">Borneo<\/a>\u00a0(known as\u00a0<i><a title=\"Kalimantan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kalimantan\">Kalimantan<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in Indonesia),\u00a0<a title=\"Sulawesi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sulawesi\">Sulawesi<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"New Guinea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Guinea\">New Guinea<\/a>; two major island groups (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Nusa Tenggara\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nusa_Tenggara\">Nusa Tenggara<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Maluku Islands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maluku_Islands\">Maluku Islands<\/a>) and sixty smaller island groups.
